How to dispose of used MVHR filters and their packaging

How to handle and dispose of used MVHR and ventilation filters safely, and how to recycle ZenAero filter packaging correctly.

A used filter contains what you do not want to release back into the air

During operation, MVHR and ventilation filters collect airborne particles such as dust, pollen, mould spores and fine particulate matter. Depending on the environment, they may also capture soot, traffic pollution, tyre-wear particles and other outdoor contaminants. This is why a used filter should be handled with care.

How to remove a used filter safely

Before replacing the filters, switch off the ventilation unit according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Take care not to release accumulated dust from the filter media back into the room.

1Switch off the unitMake the ventilation unit safe before opening the filter compartment.
2Wear glovesAvoid direct contact with dirty filter media.
3Do not shake the filterDo not blow, beat or vacuum it in an attempt to reuse it.
4Seal it in a bagPlace the filter in a disposable bag immediately after removal and close it.

Where should a used MVHR filter be disposed of?

Used filters from a residential MVHR or ventilation system can generally be placed in residual / general household waste. There is no need to dismantle the filter, separate the filter media from the frame or cut it open.

Waste collection rules can vary by local authority and waste operator. Always check the instructions that apply in your area before disposal.

Do not dismantle the filter to recycle the frame

Even when a filter has a cardboard frame, after use it is a mixed component contaminated with captured dust. It is preferable to dispose of the complete filter in the locally designated residual-waste stream.

How to dispose of ZenAero packaging

The packaging should be separated by material. After removing the product, place each component in the appropriate recycling stream according to your local collection rules.

Place the cardboard shipping box in the paper and cardboard recycling stream.

The product’s cardboard box also belongs in paper and cardboard recycling.

PLASTIC

Bag or protective film

If present, plastic protection used against dirt and moisture during transport and storage should be placed in the plastic-packaging recycling stream.

Cardboard with at least 70% recycled fibre. ZenAero cardboard packaging is made from cardboard containing at least 70% recycled material. Correctly placing it in paper recycling allows recoverable fibres to re-enter the recycling cycle and be used again to make paper and packaging.
